Now we enter the exhibition. You and I made a contract. It is invisible, signed at the threshold. The door closes. In here you agreed to walk slowly, stand individually, be as silent as possible. You agreed to observe, participate, and be present with the artwork. And then you left.
The existing exhibition model is built on an assumption that the audience will travel for art. As soon as they enter the exhibition space, they are signing to the invisible contract that they will participate in a certain form of encounter. Even though it is invisible, they know what they are signing up for. This could be simply called as ‘contract of observation.’ In the exhibition condition, what kind of presence is expected, what counts as the right way of participation to be in a room with a work?
What do we observe, and what is the act of observation?
The most important question is: what happens to that contract when the observer disappears?
